LET'S START A CLUB!

The Middle Georgia Schools Fencing Association is always ready to have new fencing clubs join. School fencing in Georgia is rapidly growing with new schools being added regularly.

Fencing is not yet designated as a varsity sport in Georgia high schools by the GHSA. Therefore, fencing will be considered by most schools as a club activity. Many schools allow students to earn "letters" for club activities (e.g., band, drama, chorus, etc.). Your school may also allow fencers to earn letters for fencing.

The MGSFA puts a high premium on scholastic achievement and honorable behavior. To this end, persons organizing a school fencing club should be aware of the student participation guidelines of the Association.

To start a new school fencing club in Middle Georgia, you should:

  • Contact the Middle Georgia Schools Fencing Association by sending an email to get information on how to organize a fencing club
  • Contact your school administration to get the details of how new clubs are started at your school.
  • Identify a faculty/staff sponsor, if such is required for your school to have an official club.
  • Identify an available fencing coach. MGSFA has a list of registered fencing coaches and instructors eligible to provide quality instruction to your students
  • Identify an available facility at which to practice. Many schools utilize nearby churches, elementary school, middle school, high school gymnasiums and cafeterias, etc.
  • Fill out the MGSFA School Registration Form and send it in.
  • Pay the MGSFA annual dues (currently $250 plus $5 per fencer for insurance).
  • Once you get your fencers trained, send in your team roster for the next tournament, and start fencing!

MGFSA is working towards GHSA sanctioning to make fencing a varsity sport in Georgia high schools. The more clubs, schools, and teams that participate, the more likely this will happen.
